If one of your business goals is to get more press exposure via Media Outlets then using social media strategically can help you achieve these goals. To me – “Media” and “Press” mean any 3rd party outlet that has an audience of users that turn to them for information whether it be news, reviews, announcements, articles etc.
Media Outlets could include:
- News Papers
- Radio Stations
- Television Stations
How to Use Social Media to Gain Coverage By Media
First of all you need a story or an edge that is somewhat newsworthy. Media outlets will only pick up content that will benefit their audience in someway. So the very first step in gaining any coverage is to come up with a story and then establish a way to get that story out there.
We usually start the process with a Press Release. This is a formal announcement that is recognized by all media outlets as a method of sharing a story. We publish a press release online (i.e. you would post it on your website). Here is an example of a press release:
The next step is creating a Media List. This will include a list of all of the Media Outlets that you want to share your press release with and the emails of the correct contact people at each “station”. There are online services that will push your Press Release out to a mass list and these are worth exploring. Some are free, some have a cost. It depends on the goals you have for your press release. If you want to reach as many publications as possible and online push will certainly help. If you are looking instead just to get featured in local media then a custom media list will be more beneficial. Don’t be afraid to call a media outlet and ASK who to send a press release to.
Online services for Press Release Distribution:
A “Media Kit” is a term we use for a place to have ready any information a potential media person might want to reference in regards to the story. It can be the same web page as your Press Release. Think about having ready – Pictures, Videos, more text on your story, any relevant links, a more in depth bio of yourself or the main players of your story etc.
How to now use social media to push out your press release; share the Press Release via posts to all of your own social media platforms. (ask everyone you know to share!) The more interest and exposure your press release gets the more notice it will get and have the potential to gain interest by media.
Connect via your social media platforms with any and all of the people on your media list. Almost every single journalist or media personality will be using Twitter and LinkedIN.

As soon as you get any coverage, whether it is an Influencer or Blogger sharing your story or a Radio Station just did an interview – share share share this information on your social media. and TAG TAG TAG the media outlets and the journalist if applicable.
A few last minute tips – ride the story as long, as you can – and maximize the lasting effects of the media coverage. Follow up, follow up, follow up! Keep in touch with your media list and make sure they got your press release etc.
