20 Questions to Ask on Social Media to Encourage Engagement

This article will explore 20 Questions that you can ask on social media to encourage engagement on your social posts.  All social media platforms operate on similar algorithms.  The more engagement your content gets, the more engagement your content will get.  This is because the social media platform will favour posts with more engagement and show this content in news feeds and searches to more people.  That is why the goal of so many is to increase engagement because in the end it will result in higher reach, more clicks and more customers!

What is engagement on social media?

Engagement is any action that a social media user performs on content.  This includes a like, comment, share, or view.  Also might include watching a video or clicking on a website link.

How is engagement measured on social media?

If you check the analytics or insights you will see statistics that reflect your engagement rates.

You can see from this screenshot below that Twitter actually shows the "engagement rate" as a KPI (key performance indicator) in its analytics dashboard.

The rate of engagement that you might be looking for on our social media is going to depend on your audience and your industry.  1.4% is actually pretty low.  But this is a new account so I do not expect it to be higher yet.  You will only want to set your own KPI's after you measure for a few months to see the trends.

How Can I Increase Engagement on Social Media?

Are you looking to increase the engagement on your social media posts?  One strategy you can use to do this is to ask questions to encourage your audience to respond by asking them a question.  I find using questions as part of our content mix really helps to increase engagement, interaction, and can also be a huge source of valuable information.

Remember the more engagement that you get on social media platforms - the more engagement you will get.

This is the magic formula of all of the algorithms.

So what types of questions to ask on social media to increase engagement?

Accompany your question with attractive images / graphics that are relevant to the question.  Perhaps even share your question as a video?

You can also use questions as a way to get feedback for your business that might be useful now or in the future.  For example you might ask your social media audience "What is your favourite item on our menu" (if you are a restaurant).  The responses you get will be very valuable!
