Do Not Type All In Caps
Good morning everyone! I just needed to share this again, and if I have before and I’m repeating myself I’m sorry but this really needs to be said. Please when you are posting on social media DO NOT TYPE ALL IN CAPS!
Why typing in all capital letters can have negative impact:
TYPING IN ALL CAPS SEEMS LIKE YOU ARE SHOUTING OR YELLING
When you post using all caps it is akin to shouting. It can seem like you are yelling at your audience, and I’m pretty sure that you don’t want to set that tone with your social media or any other form of digital communication.
(note this applies to emails, and text messages too)
TYPING IN ALL CAPS APPEARS RUDE
From a readers perspective if you are typing the body of your social media text using all capital letters this sets a rude tone. Rude can be defined as being impolite or having startling abruptness, and typing your message in all caps online can have this impact.
IT IS MORE DIFFICULT TO READ TEXT TYPED ALL IN CAPITAL LETTERS
That’s right. It makes it more difficult to communicate a word when it is in all caps; It does not make it easier. This is the case for two main reasons. Capital letters look more similar than lower case letters……WHY?
We read more lowercase text, so as a matter of habit, lowercase is more familiar and thus more legible.
So if your goal is to have your social media post read by your audience, presenting your message in lower case will be easier for them to read.
Trying to read a long message via email, text or social media that is typed in all text is also visually hard on the eyes.
I hope this little post about “netiquette” is helpful for you to consider when you are posting on social media either from your personal platforms or your business accounts – be mindful of how you are presenting your message and what your audience might absorb from the method of delivery. Standard practice in social media is not to type all in capital letters and if you choose to do so you might be setting a negative tone with your audience.
