What is “SEO”

What is Google Search Console?

Google Search Console is a free tool offered by Google to help website owners monitor and understand the visibility of their website on Google searches.  (Was previously called Google Webmaster Tools).  If you already have a gmail account – you have a google search console account too – you just need to login via:


You can add your website (and verify it) easily.  If you use Yoast or another SEO plugin on your website chances are there is a section in the settings that allows you to verify Google Search Console within your website too.

How to use Google Search Console to Benefit My Website

Google Search Console can help your website in the following ways:

  1.  Get Powerful data showing you what pages are ranked on Google, what impressions and clicks you are getting, to what pages, for which keywords, down to which country
  2. See what keywords you are ranking for and their position (gives you goals to work on).  Highly suggest exporting the data into excel so you can see the keywords by Position – this is one of the most important KPI’s in SEO. The closer ranking you can get to “1” is therefor the top of the search results
  3. Discover errors on your website and pages.  Click on Coverage menu tab and Google will show you where it has found pages with errors while crawling your website.  Very important to fix all errors.
  4. Links.  Which web pages link to your website (internally and externally).  Backlinking is one of the very important tools in getting your website ranked higher by the search engines.  Having many high quality links back to your website increase your page ranking.  The “Links” section of Google Search console shows you which sites are linking back to you.

Google Search Console is different from Google Analytics and should be used in addition to as part of your SEO Toolbox.  There are MANY moving pieces to SEO, this is an important key.
