Good morning friends! Today is Monday September 23rd and the first day of Autumn. I LOVE Fall! The cooler air, warm sweaters, fuzzy socks, pumpkin spice muffins from Tim Hortons! One of my goals this fall is to work on growing my personal brand and social media connections in a real and effective way. One of my strategies to achieve this goal is to be more visible, be more real, and build more engagement across my social media channels. This is somewhat new to me and I’m working on getting over my fears and self doubt and just putting myself out there more. One of the ways I see social media changing for brands, companies, small business, is that increasingly audiences are looking for authenticity. They don’t want to be SOLD to. Social Media users want to connect, engage, FEEL. So we as social media managers need to develop strategies to be more human. Make companies and brands look more human.

When you are posting and behaving on social media in an authentic way you are being honest, genuine, real. By behaving in this way social media users will behave back to you this way – creating engagement. Creating trust. When people like and trust you, they will do business with you.

Being authentic = building trust.

A definition I found on Google for the word social:

social. If you are socialyou like to be around people. A social butterfly is someone who is social or friendly with everyone, flitting from person to person, the way a butterfly might. The word social comes from the Latin socius meaning “friend.” Whenyou‘re being socialyou‘re everyone’s friend.

So if you apply this to social media – essentially it could be construed as that online we make connections and we become “friends”. From a branding perspective then for businesses to be successful the more people they can engage with in a friendly or meaningful way the more success they will have on their social media.

Think about brands or businesses or even personal brands that are succeeding on social media. For example – KFC. If you are looking for a brand that is truly social – they are authentic they are funny, they are engaging. I love the humour and the honesty of their posts.

Ways you can be authentic on social media:

  • Use humour
  • Use emojis
  • Share images of REAL people, real team members, real customers, real behind the scenes situations
  • Tell real stories, share real situations, challenges and ask for help
  • Ask your audience questions
  • Be a story teller
  • Share and engage on other accounts in a real and friendly way
  • Be friendly
  • Care
  • Build relationships not just followers
