TRENDS TO WATCH FOR IN 2021…ONLINE

Happy New Year everyone!  I hope the beginning of 2021 finds you and your family safe and healthy.  2020 was a year of unbelievable challenges for us all.  I believe that the events of the past year have given us a new lens to look through life at.  I feel more connected to what truly matters in my life and in the World.  Health, family, friends, kindness, humanity.

I feel a deeper sense of gratitude and move into 2021 with hope for a brighter year.  I also believe that 2020 created some very interesting opportunities and made some long lasting positive changes as we pivoted to work and learn from home and do business in different ways.

Now that we are entering into a brand new year it is a great time to think about what trends you might want to be watchful for…..online.

INCREASE IN THE POPULARITY OF TIKTOK STYLE VIDEOS

TikTok was almost irrelevant at the beginning of 2020 as a marketing / social media platform.  Previously known as Music.ly the platform was mostly used by children to create cute music dance videos.

What we experienced in 2020 was a huge increase in adults using TikTok and brands turning more to it as a form to connect with their audience in a fun and authentic way.

Instagram jumped on this trend in 2020 launching its “Reels” feature with huge success.

I believe that there will be increased production and consumption of this type of video content in 2021.  Why?  Because it is short and easy to watch, and shows the truly human side of social media.

INCREASE in E-COMMERCE

By the year 2021, worldwide retail ecommerce sales will reach $4.9 trillion. (Shopify Plus, 2019)

E-commerce, or online shopping, is a trend that was increasing exponentially ANYWAYS before the COVID19 Pandemic closed many small businesses during lockdowns.  Once lockdowns hit, many small retail businesses recognized the only way to survive was to pivot to offering alternative ways for customers to shop and buy from them.  I was super impressed and proud of all business owners that took advantage of this opportunity to open an online store, which not only allowed them to service their local customer base during lockdown, but it also opened up an entirely NEW revenue source where they could now literally sell their products anywhere in the WORLD!

I believe in 2021 this trend will continue as more consumers purchase online and more businesses offer e-commerce solutions to expand their business.

OTHER ONLINE TRENDS TO WATCH in 2021

Some other trends to be aware of and watch in 2021 online include:

  • Increase use of Voice Search
  • Increase of reselling used items online
  • Live chat support / real time support & customer service

I will note these trends. I certainly agree with TikTok becoming more popular these days. As for voice search, I did not appreciate it before until I saw my 6 years old niece used it to find images of Disney princesses. I’d better be on the lookout to what she’ll be up to next 😉

I know my daughter uses a little “Echo” machine and does voice search for everything now!

  2. I definitely agree with TikTok. I didn’t expect it to blow up as it did but now, that’s all you hear and see is TikTok 😅. Great post!
