Business Foundation Series : What is your Business Name
For every single client that I work with for social media management and digital marketing consulting I use the same 3 step proven method for success. I help clients define:

I recently had a client say “well Id like to dabble in PPC next”, and I was quick to point out that there was no point in rushing into spending money on expensive PPC traffic from Google when he did not yet have the foundations of his business in place. Even his business name was not clear. He did not yet have a website or social media in place. So I am inspired to write about the foundations of building a successful business before you move forward into any other action.
The foundations of a successful business is really part of the Branding process.
What is Branding?
The process involved in creating a unique name and image for a product in the consumers’ mind, mainly through advertising campaigns with a consistent theme. Branding aims to establish a significant and differentiated presence in the market that attracts and retains loyal customers.
So step one in your branding process is this :
WHAT IS YOUR BUSINESS NAME?
Your business name is the very first building block of your foundation. And I’m here to help you build your foundation.
How do you identify your business? How do you answer the phone? How will you name your website and social media? Your business name needs to be unique, and memorable. The biggest mistake I see small business owners making is having a confusing business name or naming themselves more than one “name”. I know this is especially difficult for solopreneurs, real estate and mortgage agents, and professionals. They might be using their personal name in some instances, but a different “brand” style name for other purposes.
My suggestion to you is this – decide on your business name – and stick to it!
Tips and tricks to selecting a business name:
- The shorter the better
- Easy to spell
- Easy to remember
- The matching website domain is available! If you are not sure try searching for it on Godaddy or another domain registrar
- There should be no confusion on social media – search for similar business names on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter
- If possible include in your business name the most important keyword(s) you want to be found for! A great example was a young sign company here in Orangeville – I did a quick search and realized that nobody was using “Orangeville Signs” as their business name – BRILLIANT!!! This would be highly indexed by Google and easy to find on all social media.
